Electricity powers nearly every part of our daily lives—from the lights in our homes to the businesses that support our local economy. While we often don’t think about the work it takes to keep that power flowing, April gives us a meaningful opportunity to recognize the individuals who make it possible. Our lineworkers play an essential role in serving our members and keeping our communities connected.
April is an important month for electric cooperatives across our state. On North Carolina Lineworker Appreciation Day, celebrated on April 13, we take time to recognize the men and women who work every day to keep power flowing to our homes, schools, farms, and businesses.
At Jones-Onslow EMC, our lineworkers maintain thousands of miles of power lines across the communities we serve. It’s demanding work that requires skill, training, and a strong commitment to safety. These crews spend many hours each year sharpening their technical knowledge and preparing for the challenges that come with working around high-voltage electricity.
The job is also physically demanding. Lineworkers often climb poles more than 100 feet tall while carrying up to 50 pounds of safety gear and equipment. They work outdoors in all types of weather—from the heat of summer to the cold and storms that occasionally impact our area. Despite these challenges, they approach their work with professionalism and pride.
Many of you see their work most clearly during storms and power outages. When severe weather hits and the lights go out, our lineworkers are often among the first to respond. They work long hours, sometimes through the night, to safely restore power for our members as quickly as possible.
What makes their work especially meaningful is that they serve the same communities where they live. They understand how important reliable electricity is to everyday life, and they take pride in helping keep our communities powered and connected.
This month, I encourage you to join me in thanking the lineworkers at Jones-Onslow EMC and across North Carolina. Their dedication, skill, and commitment to service help power the communities we all call home.
The next time you see a crew working in your area, a simple thank you is always appreciated.
