Hunting Safety Tips

Stay Safe Around Power Lines This Hunting Season

October marks the start of hunting season across Eastern North Carolina— a time-honored tradition for many families and friends.

As you head into the woods this season, keep electrical safety in mind. Power lines, poles and other electrical equipment can pose serious hazards, especially when setting up tree stands or handling firearms.

A few simple precautions can help keep you and those around you safe.

Look Up and Keep Your Distance

Before placing a tree stand or hunting blind, survey the area for overhead power lines and other electrical hazards. Look up and make sure your equipment, firearm and movements remain safely away from electrical infrastructure.

Stay at least 10 feet away from standard overhead power lines and electrical equipment.

Never Lean a Tree Stand or Ladder Against a Utility Pole

Utility poles and electrical equipment are not safe supports. Keep tree stands, ladders and other equipment away from poles and power lines.

Never Shoot at Power Lines or Electrical Equipment

Shooting at power lines, insulators or transformers can cause serious injury, fires, power outages and costly damage.

Watch for Downed Lines

If you encounter a downed power line or damaged electrical equipment, stay at least 35 feet away and keep others clear. Assume every downed line is energized and dangerous, and report it to 911 and JOEMC at 910-353-1940.

A successful hunt starts with making safety a priority. Look up, stay clear and respect the power lines around you.
